Lately, as I have been driving around town, I have seen lots of “Cosmic Boo-Boo Spacenuts” laying on the ground and in the street. This reminds me of the years that we lived on Country Way. We had two of these Bo’Darc trees in our yard. The green balls that fall from them in autumn are often called horse apples or Osage oranges, but our family (actually, David) named them “Cosmic Boo-Boo Spacenuts” and claimed that they fell from space each night as we slept. The kids had the job of picking them up from the yard, a fall chore much like raking leaves. They piled them in brown paper sacks and we left them for the garbage truck. Of course many of them fell into the street and were smashed by cars that drove past. Sometimes the kids threw them into the street to try to break them open. They were actually quite a mess, and we don’t really miss them at all, but I do get rather nostalgic thinking back to those days when the kids were small. Seeing these “green balls” around town has even made me miss them a little, because of the fond memories they invoke.
I hate to be a spelling nazi, but I think the tree is a bois d’arc (so we’ll call your spelling the phonetic one). However, I have seen quite a few myself. There’s one across the street from our house and as a result, I see lots of them smashed in the street. It reminds me of when us kids used to roll them out in front of cars and watch them explode on impact. They are pretty gross, though.

I think you are right about the spelling. Obviously, it is French, but I guess I was too tired to think about it. I did think the spelling was weird so I went to Google and found it spelled “Bo’Darc.”

I remember shooting them with my BB gun. They would ooze out their white juice when I did that.

Didn’t that tree cause more than one major injury?

Yes, when we cut down the tree in the front yard, it caused three injuries requiring medical attention. First, James got something in his eye when he was watching from the ground as David was cutting branches out of the tree. I had to take him to the doctor the next day when it was still causing him problems. Next, I stepped on one of the thorns which went through the leather sole of my shoe. I had to get a tetnus shot. The third thing that happened occurred when David was trying to cut the trunk off below the surface of the ground. He was hammering on the head of the axe when a piece of metal splintered off and went into his arm. This caused a trip to the emergency room for him to have the splinter of metal removed from his forearm.
